One job should be enough—enough for us to go to the doctor, to retire with dignity, to live the American Dream. The clearest path to creating more jobs that provide enough is to grow the labor movement. We need more national leaders working to remove barriers to forming unions and standing with workers when they exercise their collective power to improve working conditions.
Too often, jobs in this country aren’t enough. Many of us have to work two to three jobs just to get by. Some of us can’t get enough work. More and more companies are finding ways of ways of cutting benefits or labor for extra profit–pressuring workers to do the work of two or three people or using the latest technologies to eliminate workers with no regard for their place in the larger economy.
These corporations are more than big enough to create jobs that provide enough. Today, the wealthiest 1% of American households owns 40% of the country’s wealth.
That’s why UNITE HERE and the rest of the union movement matter now more than ever. This year, unions have put billions back in the pockets of working people. Unions also provide the clearest path to creating greater equality among workers, combating discrimination that sharpens income inequality along racial and gender lines. We need elected leaders who will fight alongside workers to level the playing field, giving workers the freedom to unionize, fight inequality and exercise their collective power.
