Making Suits for Barack Obama and Stephen Colbert
The history of UNITE HERE includes more than a century in the textile and clothing industries. Many of our predecessor unions, including the International Ladies Garment Workers Union (ILGWU), the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America (ACWA), and the Textile Workers Union of America (TWUA), were on the forefront of the labor movement, establishing middle-class jobs for factory workers and fighting for immigrant and women’s rights.
UNITE HERE members produce men’s and women’s clothing, shoes, and hats, as well as carpets and other soft goods for homes and cars. UNITE HERE members in Las Vegas and New England clean linen for hospitals, hotels, and restaurants, as well as the uniforms for workers in thousands of businesses. Our members also make or finish all kinds of woven and knit fabrics and staff the distribution centers that send those products around the world.
