Statement from UNITE HERE President D. Taylor on Biden Immigration Bill
“UNITE HERE members hail from all over the globe and, for decades, immigrant workers have been at the center of our Union’s efforts to end poverty and change lives.
“In 2020, over 1,700 UNITE HERE members canvassed door-to-door in states like Nevada, Arizona, and Pennsylvania to win the election for President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. With that victory won, we shifted our efforts to Georgia, where we helped win Senate runoff races for Rev. Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff.
“We fought to Take Back our Country—and have fought specifically for immigration reform—because we believe that all working people deserve respect, and that all immigrants deserve a path to citizenship. Our Union has led the labor movement to call for immigration reform, including a pathway to citizenship for the more than 11 million undocumented immigrants in the U.S., Dreamers, and permanent protections for immigrants with Temporary Protected Status.
“UNITE HERE congratulates President Biden on the introduction of the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021, a legislative proposal to transform the American immigration system, including an eight-year path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants and an expedited path for Dreamers, Temporary Protected Status holders, and agricultural workers.
“We will continue our work to advocate for dignity and respect for all workers, and look forward to doing so alongside the Biden administration.”
