Immigrant Workers in Toronto Rally
“We Are The New Majority
Location: Rally at Toronto’s City Hall march to Fairmont Royal York hotel (100 Front St. W.)
Date and Time: Thursday, July 31 @ 5pm
Hundreds of service-sector workers, community supporters and other immigrants will rally in front of Toronto’s City Hall on Thursday, July 31 at 5pm to deliver a message of hope: we are the new majority in the city of Toronto, and we have the power to build a community where all can prosper.
The rally and march will highlight how community members in Rexdale are building a powerful movement for change; how Airport-area hotel workers joined together in a fight for a better standard of living; how workers across the city are standing up for respect on the job and in their communities.
The rally spearheaded by UNITE HERE Local 75 and CORD (Community Organizing for Responsible Development) is intended to raise awareness about the changing face of the workforce in the GTA. According to Statistics Canada census immigrants now represent 52% of the growing population in Toronto.
Speaking about immigrant workers in the city, Helen Liu, a Chinese immigrant working as a Cafeteria Attendant at the Fairmont Royal York hotel states, “we are the new majority”. She adds “we want to engage in the political process and be part of the decision making in our city.”
The rally and march is part of the “Hotel Workers Rising” campaign also referred to as “Immigrant Workers Rising” an emerging movement of workers in the GTA.
