Workers to the Front: Hospitality Workers’ Union Outlines Path to Victory for Democrats in 2022
WHO: Hospitality workers’ union, UNITE HERE, representing housekeepers, cooks, dishwashers, and other workers in hotels, casinos, food service, and other industries; UNITE HERE’s Culinary Union (Nevada), UNITE HERE Local 11 (Arizona), and UNITE HERE Philly (Pennsylvania). Hear from canvassers in three key battleground states about what voters are talking about most at doors.
WHAT: Zoom press conference and canvasser rally. Media RSVP for Zoom link here.
WHEN: Wednesday, September 14 at 2:00 p.m. EST / 11:00 a.m. PST
WHY: In three of the country’s closest and most high-profile 2022 midterm battleground states—Nevada, Arizona, and Pennsylvania—hundreds of hospitality workers are talking to voters about the issues that matter most to them.
UNITE HERE is spearheading its largest-ever ground program in some of the 2022 midterm’s closest elections. The union, which led the largest labor canvassing program nationwide in 2020, helped secure victories for Biden/Harris in 2020 and Democratic control of the Senate in Georgia. With crucial support from our allies across the labor movement and beyond, UNITE HERE is escalating its field program as Election Day draws nearer.
UNITE HERE’s political program is part of a decades-long cycle of investment in building organizing infrastructure year-round, not just during election season. UNITE HERE members train as organizers in their shops advocating for their coworkers, then they bring those skills into their neighborhoods, many of which are heavily Black and Brown and immigrant communities, to get out the vote during election season. Then they return to the shop to keep building organization in their workplace—and often go on to organize non-union workers in the hospitality industry—and continue the cycle.
***Open invitation for press to “Walk With Us”***
UNITE HERE invites media to join our canvassers in the field for a day. Interested press can reach out to Diana Hussein [email protected] to plan for a date and time in one of three key battleground states—Nevada (Las Vegas, Reno), Arizona (Phoenix), or Pennsylvania (Philadelphia). It’s the best way to hear about what issues voters care about most and get a sense of how things are going before November. Canvassers are also available by Zoom or phone.
