Statement from UNITE HERE International President D. Taylor:
Today in the Senate, Mitch McConnell and his Republican colleagues attempted a corporate coup. Thankfully, the Senate Democrats defeated them. While our country moves ever closer to an economic calamity, the GOP leaders who should be putting American workers first instead attempted to use this crisis to force through a plan that will line the pockets of corporate interests at the expense of the workers who keep our nation running.
Heavily impacted businesses should be helped, but it must start with workers first. Workers across America are losing their jobs, savings, and health care. We must put in place an emergency social safety net that includes paid sick leave, extension of health care, immediate availability of unemployment insurance, rent assistance and food assistance.
The Democrats must hold the line against a corporate welfare bailout. We need to and must put workers first, not line the pockets of corporate interests.
