New York, NY – Today, President D. Taylor and the Executive Committee of UNITE HERE International Union unanimously adopted the following statement:
Just when we think the Trump administration cannot stoop any lower in its ongoing determination to demonize immigrants, it came to light that the administration has been jailing children as leverage for the President’s border wall. President Trump is trying to sweep his inhumane actions under the rug with this Executive Order today, but the crisis of family separation remains endemic to our broken immigration system. There is no justice when our government continues to criminalize asylum seekers and forcibly hold families in detention centers. We must remain vigilant in the face of this moral crisis that the Trump administration has provoked.
From the Muslim ban, to the termination of DACA and Temporary Protected Status, to reducing admission of refugees and immigrants fleeing violence and natural disaster, Trump is taking America further and further away from its founding values.
The “zero tolerance policy” rolled out by Attorney General Sessions in April is tantamount to state-sponsored child abuse. This Executive Order does nothing to change this fact, as it continues to empower our government to lock children and their parents away. We are committed to mobilizing our members in the coming days and weeks to oppose family detention and fight for the dignity and respect of all workers, including our immigrant brothers and sisters.
We will continue our fight for permanent legal status and citizenship for Dreamers and those with Temporary Protected Status, and pursue true immigration reform that keeps families together.
