UNITE HERE applauds the introduction of the U.S. Citizenship Act, President Biden’s immigration reform bill that would provide pathways to citizenship and strengthen labor protections for undocumented immigrants, Dreamers, and Temporary Protected Status holders. Workers have advocated for decades both in their workplaces and their communities to secure these protections.
During the 2020 presidential election, over 1,700 UNITE HERE housekeepers, cooks, servers, and dishwashers canvassed door-to-door in Nevada, Arizona, Florida, and Pennsylvania and then worked to take back the Senate in the Georgia runoff to make transformational legislation like the U.S. Citizenship Act possible.
“I canvassed full time to elect President Biden and Vice President Harris because as a Temporary Protected Status holder I was determined to restore dignity to immigrants in this country,” said Mario Guzman, a laid-off waiter at Wolfgang Puck American Grill in Atlantic City. “After leaving El Salvador 27 years ago, I immigrated to New Jersey where I met my wife. We have three children who are all U.S. citizens, ages two through twelve, who depend on us. Under the Trump administration my children worried each morning when I left home if I would return. A pathway to citizenship is what’s needed for us to stop living in fear—the U.S. is my home.”
UNITE HERE wholeheartedly supports President Biden and Vice President Harris’s vision to pass legislative immigration reform to ensure that families stay together.
