Yesterday, Republicans once again opted to hold our freedom to vote hostage in an indictment of who they are as a political party wanting fewer—not all—people to vote. This is unacceptable, and we will continue to fight until every single American has equal access to the ballot box.
The Freedom to Vote Act is a critical first step in advancing the rights of every American—Republicans included. Over 70% of voters support policies that are in the bill. Congress is trying to move what a supermajority of our country supports but the GOP insists on blocking.
It’s no coincidence that large communities of color and Black communities live in the states where the GOP is most egregiously attacking our freedom to vote. This historical problem is still a problem and states like Texas and Georgia will only continue falling further back without oversight.
The crisis of our freedom to vote is one of the biggest and most urgent in a moment of many big and urgent crises. It’s precisely one of the main reasons why we are throwing down to keep Virginia blue this November—because our democracy simply cannot survive another GOP-run state.
We worked hard to take back the power of the White House. We worked hard to take back the Senate. We worked hard to secure a trifecta of power so that the livelihood of all workers and families can see improvement and opportunity. All else has failed. It’s time to do even more.
It is unacceptable that Republicans are utilizing the filibuster—wielded by racist refusals to prevent the granting of civil rights to all—to continue to deny every American the right to vote. We stand with the AFL-CIO and others in the labor and progressive movement to insist that Congress do whatever it takes to protect our voting rights, including the reform of Senate rules.
