Joint Statement on the UAW-GM Strikes by Nia Winston, President of UNITE HERE Local 24 in Detroit and General Vice President of UNITE HERE IU, and D. Taylor, President of UNITE HERE
On behalf of 300,000 members from Detroit and across our Union, UNITE HERE stands in solidarity with the 50,000 UAW workers who went out on strike after General Motors failed to reach a fair agreement. We applaud the courage of UAW workers to take this bold step, so that one job can be enough for auto workers across the U.S. and their families. In Detroit, where UNITE HERE and UAW households blend, and we know that the actions you take today will send a powerful message to the auto industry and impact workers everywhere. We’re proud to join the picket line and stand with auto workers who—like hotel, gaming or airline catering workers—are demanding that one job should be enough to support ourselves and our families.
UNITE HERE has over 300,000 members working in the hotel, gaming, food service, manufacturing, textile, distribution, laundry, transportation, and airport industries in the U.S. and Canada, including many immigrant members. Learn more at www.unitehereimmigration.org
