UNITE HERE Secretary-Treasurer Statement Celebrating Warnock Victory: “When we vote, we win.”
The hospitality workers’ Union UNITE HERE ran labor’s largest field operation in GA after securing victories and the Senate majority as the largest in NV, AZ, and PA — knocking on over 3.2 million doors over the 2022 midterm cycle.
In response to the projected victory for Senator Raphael Warnock, UNITE HERE International Secretary-Treasurer Gwen Mills issued the following statement:
“If you’ve ever joined a UNITE HERE canvass launch, you know one of our favorite chants: ‘When we vote, we win.’ And that’s never been truer than today, as we celebrate with Georgia and the rest of our nation a victory for Senator Raphael Warnock. We did it — again. We won. And we once again changed the course of history.
“UNITE HERE fights every day to ensure that One Job Should Be Enough for all of us to survive and thrive. This means fighting for better wages and benefits while also building political power at the ballot box
“In Georgia, we knew the deck was stacked against us. The runoff is a relic of Jim Crow-era policies aimed at diluting the influence of Black voters, and since the last one in 2021, Republicans changed the rules to make it even harder for people to vote.
“But every day working people battle inflation, corporate greed, and weak labor laws — we are no strangers to tough fights. And despite these obstacles — we voted — and we won.
“Our victory in Georgia proves that we can overcome the odds when we come together and do the work. UNITE HERE built a team of 500 multi-racial, multi-generational working-class people who worked thousands of hours to deliver this win. Collectively, our coalition knocked on an astounding 5 million doors in less than a month.
“Georgia’s turnout is evidence that the ground game works. We operate within the margin of effort; driving campaigns in the spaces pundits say are out of reach. Our coalition’s efforts helped shatter records for early voting. Today, we celebrate what we can achieve when we fight — and when we vote — for how we win.”
