|SEATTLE CENTER (adjacent to the Space Needle)
The Space Needle is Seattle ‘s most important landmark and a highly profitable business. Day in day out workers make sure that visitors have a great time high up in the sky. It is only because of its hard working employees, the Space Needle’s Sky City Restaurant is one of the top restaurants in the United States and has generated $12.9 million in food sales in 2004 alone.
Instead of sharing some of their wealth and rewarding their world class staff with a decent and respectful contract offer, the Space Needle Corporation has shocked their employees by denying them their freedom of speech, increasing costs for their medical, only offering low wages, and denying immigrant workers some of their basic human rights.
“For us it is a matter of respect and a question of making a living for our families. This is greed on management’s side. They go up in income and we go down. For my family I need a medical insurance and I need good wages when everything is getting more expensive” says a long time Space Needle worker who wants to remain anonymous fearing management retaliation.
“Because of the new policies the company comes up with whenever they feel like it, we are working in constant fear of being fired. The feeling of mistrust towards management is very big with the employees” says another worker.
Union spokesperson Cindy Richardson adds: “It is obvious that the employer attempts to push these workers and their families into poverty just to further increase profits. I can’t believe the reputation of the long time historical symbol of our city is being tarnished this way.”
