UNITE HERE Hospitality Workers’ Union Endorses Angela Alsobrooks for Maryland Senate
Baltimore, MD — UNITE HERE Locals 7, 23, and 25 today announced that they have endorsed Angela Alsobrooks to be the next Senator from Maryland. Collectively, these unions represent some 8,000 Maryland voters who work in hotels, restaurants, casinos, airports, and food service. The union represents workers at numerous Maryland landmarks including BWI Airport, MGM National Harbor, and Camden Yards, in establishments from Ocean City to National Harbor.
“As we fight for fair contracts in Baltimore and good jobs for Maryland workers, we need strong allies in the Senate,” said Tracy Lingo, President of UNITE HERE Local 7, which represents workers across Baltimore, Central Maryland, and the Eastern Shore. “Larry Hogan’s policies were awful for working families during his time in Annapolis, and we will fight to keep him out of Congress.”
“It’s past time we had a qualified candidate who is a friend of workers and Unions and happens to be a Black woman representing Maryland in the Senate,” said Marlene Patrick Cooper, President of UNITE HERE Local 23, which represents food service workers across Maryland. “We look forward to working closely with Ms. Alsobrooks to advance the interests of hospitality workers across the state and across the country.”
“This isn’t just a fight for Maryland’s next Senator, it’s a fight against the poisonous MAGA agenda in Maryland,” said Paul Schwalb, Executive Secretary-Treasurer of UNITE HERE Local 25, which represents hospitality workers in Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties. “Our union is one of the fastest growing in the country, which is why we’re counting on Ms. Alsobrooks to have our backs once she takes office.”
UNITE HERE played a pivotal role in delivering the election for President Biden in 2020 and fending off a “Red Wave” in 2022. This year, the union’s national canvassing operation has already surpassed one million doors knocked. The stakes are high, with workers’ rights, fair wages, and opportunity to build on the pro-union legacy of the Biden administration on the line. In Maryland, union members will run canvasses throughout the Fall in support of Ms. Alsobrook’s candidacy.
