Statement on Guilty Verdict in Derek Chauvin Trial from UNITE HERE President D. Taylor
Our thoughts and solidarity are with the family of George Floyd today and everyone who has lost a family member to police brutality. We hope you can have some peace of mind.
Today a guilty verdict was delivered in the case of Derek Chauvin, but there is more work to be done to upend the unjust and racist criminal justice system that has unfairly targeted Black communities and other communities of color. UNITE HERE stands with a growing movement that is calling for real accountability and real safety in our communities, so that we can achieve a society that is truly committed to liberty and justice for all.
UNITE HERE is a Union of hospitality workers, who hail from all corners of the planet. We are mostly brown and Black. Our Union is our common bond, and our solidarity is the tool we use to fight oppression of all forms. Now more than ever, we must harness that tool to fight anti-black racism that has been institutionalized and embedded at the deepest levels of our society. Coming out of the Trump era and state-sanctioned violence against Black communities and communities of color, we must acknowledge this rising trend is not going to buckle anytime soon.
As a labor movement, we can harness that solidarity to stand together with our Black siblings against hate and oppression at all levels, just as we must stand together with our Asian siblings, our Latinx siblings, and immigrants. It’s by standing together, that we can overcome the enormous obstacles and deepening inequalities that plague our society.
UNITE HERE stands strong in the fight against police brutality and anti-Black violence, and we stand in solidarity with the family of George Floyd today, and the families of all those who have lost loved ones at the hands of the police every day. We will not rest until Black Lives truly Matter to those in power, and until we achieve equality and justice for all communities – Black, Indigenous and People of Color – who are targeted by police and failed by our broken criminal justice system.
