Today, UNITE HERE celebrates the one-year-anniversary of the American Rescue Plan by reflecting on what its passage meant to hospitality workers across the U.S. This legislation changed the lives of millions of workers by extending enhanced unemployment insurance, granting $1,400 stimulus checks, safeguarding workers’ hard-earned pensions, introducing the critical $300 boost for families with children, and providing essential health coverage to those who needed it most.
When we say, “elections matter,” we mean it. It’s because of all the efforts of the 1,700 hospitality workers who helped make the American Rescue Plan happen by electing a pro-worker Administration that UNITE HERE alone was able to help sign up over 40,000 unemployed and underemployed workers for six months of free health insurance through the 100% COBRA subsidies included in the package.
The American Rescue Plan showed that there is power in working people coming together and demanding what we deserve. Hospitality workers spent weeks phone banking and writing to their Congressional representatives, urging them to pass the American Rescue Plan—and years playing a role in local and national politics to have the representation we needed in Washington. Going into the final stretch, workers’ advocacy and endurance aided the passage of historic health care legislation.
The legislation signed by President Biden fulfilled one of the biggest campaign promises to the hard-working people that helped put his administration into power. We look forward to continuing to work alongside the Administration in ensuring that more critical campaign promises get fulfilled.
