UNITE HERE congratulates President Liz Shuler and Secretary-Treasurer Fred Redmond on their historic election as the most diverse slate to lead America’s largest federation of unions, the AFL-CIO. Now is the time for bold, strong leadership to guide affiliates like ours through this hot moment we’re in for organizing—a moment we must recognize won’t last forever. The vision laid out at the AFL-CIO 29th Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia this week shows a clear focus on growing our moment—on organizing new workers into unions and building our collective power even further.
This historic slate of leadership comes at a time where we have the most pro-union administration in our lifetime. During his remarks on Tuesday at the Convention, President Biden’s economic message aligned with what we in the labor movement are always fighting to achieve—an economy that is built from the bottom-up, not the top-down; one that lifts people out of poverty, not hold them down as the rich gain more wealth.
UNITE HERE is proud to be a union that is driven by the leadership of its rank-and-file members. We are committed to organizing new workers in hospitality across the country, including in the deep south where we already represent thousands of workers. The backbone of our organizing is the belief that One Job Should Be Enough—enough to pay bills, go to the doctor, and to retire with dignity.
You can count on UNITE HERE to contribute to the new organizing goal set at the Convention—the virus that laid off 98% of our membership couldn’t even stop us from leading the country’s most effective field operation in 2020. It didn’t stop us from organizing over 10,000 new workers in the first year of the pandemic. That’s because nothing can stop UNITE HERE.
We look forward to fighting alongside this new generation of leadership to grow our movement.
