“Ever since COVID-19 hit, our Union has fought hard to create safer working conditions because hospitality workers interact with travelers from around the globe, work in close kitchen quarters with others, and face other risks for exposure at work. UNITE HERE has lost hundreds to this deadly virus this year—some due to direct exposure on the job. We need action that will protect working people everywhere, not just those who work for employers or in places where there is the political will to do so.
“That’s why UNITE HERE supports the Department of Labor’s emergency actions today that makes full vaccination or routine testing and face masks a national standard for employers with 100 workers or more. These are commonsense measures that will save lives. Setting new OSHA standards nationwide is a crucial step toward getting our economy back on track and protecting working people and their families.”
UNITE HERE is the hospitality workers’ union in the U.S. and Canada, representing over 300,000 workers in hotels, gaming, restaurants and food service, airports, and more. Ninety-eight percent of its members were laid off at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, and sixty percent remain out of work today.
