“President Trump and the Republican Party ran on a promise to immediately repeal the ‘broken’ Affordable Care Act and replace it with something ‘great.’ As recently as January, Trump vowed they had a healthcare overhaul plan for ‘insurance for everybody’ that would be ‘much less expensive and much better.’
“Instead, what was unveiled by House Republicans is a plan that slashes healthcare coverage for millions of Americans, includes ridiculous giveaways—like a tax break for healthcare corporations that pay executives more than $500,000 a year—and imposes a huge tax increase on middle-class health benefits to pay for tax cuts for the rich. TrumpCare will gut Medicaid expansion and subsidies that have made lifesaving health care available to millions of Americans. It will drive up already skyrocketing out-of-pocket costs and drive down coverage for the vast majority of Americans under age 65—more than 177 million—who get health insurance through work.
“House Speaker Paul Ryan wants to push this flawed plan quickly through committee, out of the House, and on to the Senate. Ryan wants to jam through TrumpCare without any analysis of the new burdens on the middle class or a full accounting of how many millions of Americans will lose their health care. Lawmakers and the public will be left to guess the costs and effects of a bill with massive implications for our entire healthcare system and the health of every American.
“Whoever you voted for in November, no one voted for dropped coverage, worse benefits at higher costs, and a huge tax on middle-class health benefits. That’s exactly what TrumpCare does, and every member of Congress—Democrat or Republican—should reject this bill.”
