On July 16, a U.S. district court in Texas ruled that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program is unlawful. Under this ruling the federal government is blocked from granting any new first-time DACA applications, putting a partial end to it. Judge Andrew Hanen ruled that no new DACA applications will be granted, and that USCIS can continue to process renewal applications for now.
UNITE HERE vehemently stands against this anti-immigrant decision. We are committed to fight for immigrant youth to live freely in this country and achieve full citizenship. Under DACA, hundreds of thousands of immigrants have received work authorizations, including many hospitality workers and their families. Through this program, young people have been able to fulfill their dreams to live, work, study, and contribute to America without fear of deportation.
We call on Congress to act now to create a pathway to citizenship through any possible avenue, including budget reconciliation, providing permanent relief once and for all. We support President Biden’s announcement, “It is my fervent hope that through reconciliation or other means, Congress will finally provide security to all Dreamers, who have lived too long in fear.” A pathway to citizenship is the only way to permanently protect hundreds of thousands of immigrants whose home is here.
