Statement from D. Taylor, president of UNITE HERE, on passage in the House of the AHCA
“As Trump, Ryan, and the rest of the House GOP celebrate, millions of hard-working Americans are one step closer to seeing their health care destroyed.
“Today, they voted to strip life-saving care for the poorest and sickest of their constituents—gutting nearly a trillion dollars in Medicaid funding and subsidies—and to tax the health benefits of 177 million American workers. A whopping 40% excise tax will mean billions of dollars out of the wallets of already-strapped working families, further cuts to their benefits, and higher out-of-pocket costs. It’s hard to know which is sickest, that GOP House members exempted themselves for the new law or that all of this human misery is in order to pay for a massive tax for the ultra-wealthy.
“Trumpcare guts essential protections that Americans overwhelmingly support by incentivizing states to once again let insurers abuse customers. Insurers will again be able to charge huge premiums for pre-existing conditions, deny coverage for essential health benefits—like cancer screenings and prescription medications—and impose lifetime and annual cap on their plans.
“The fight is not over. As Trumpcare moves to the Senate, UNITE HERE members and all working people will continue to fight to fix our healthcare system, not destroy it. And we will hold every politician to account for their vote.”
