Sodexo food service workers across New York and New Jersey have been fighting for new contracts with raises that are enough to afford the massive increases in the cost of housing, food, and transportation. On Thursday, March 9, workers will rally outside the Sodexo cafeteria located in Bloomberg to announce the results of strike votes at Sodexo cafeterias. If authorized workers could strike at any time.
UNITE HERE Local 100 represents Sodexo workers in cafeterias and other food outlets at locations across New York and New Jersey, including in the Federal Reserve of New York, Bloomberg, Colgate, and Weil, Gotshal & Manges.
“We need more money to live in New York. It’s difficult to cover my rent, electricity bills, my train tickets, groceries, and credit card debt. A raise would help me a lot, and I know Sodexo has the money to pay me more. I am voting to strike because we need a raise and we need it right now,” said Ryllis Roberts, a Sodexo cook at Bloomberg.
Sodexo workers’ contracts expired on December 1, 2022, and they are in negotiations with their employer. Key issues for workers include wage increases and stopping the company’s attempts to weaken protections that prevent union jobs from being subcontracted out.
