UNITE HERE opposes Senate Republican answer to DREAM Act and latest unilateral travel ban by Trump Administration
New York, NY – The Succeed Act unveiled Monday is designed by GOP Senators to destroy families. By barring Dreamers from petitioning for their family members to immigrate, this Republican legislation will tear Dreamers from their families in the guise of offering reprieve.
“The ‘Succeed Act’ is dangerous for American immigrants because it is a ploy by Senate Republicans to hold Dreamers as political hostage; it substitutes subpar policy in place of the comprehensive DREAM Act 2017 bill that we desperately need and would break apart families,” said Maria Elena Durazo, International General Vice President of UNITE HERE, a union that represents many DACA recipients.
UNITE HERE represents hospitality workers, an industry that employs a disproportionately high amount of DACA recipients, or Dreamers. An estimated 16% of all DACA workers are employed in the food service industry alone. UNITE HERE is proud to represent many Muslim immigrants, including from countries impacted by the travel ban.
UNITE HERE also swiftly opposed the new and expanded travel ban. Said Maria Elena; “Trump’s latest Muslim travel ban flies in the face of the American judicial system, with Supreme Court litigation pending over his earlier attempts that have already been partially struck down in court. With a nearly immediate start date and no expiration, this latest ban is executive overreach at its worst and a major attack on the families of law abiding American immigrants who make meaningful contributions towards serving their country.”
