Statement from D. Taylor, President of UNITE HERE, in Response to ACA Supreme Court Decision
The Supreme Court’s decision on the ACA is just plain common sense and will protect millions of American families who desperately need health insurance. The Court has reinforced the positive intent of the ACA to expand access to healthcare.
Now both parties can stop the mindless political posturing and fix what doesn’t work, namely rules that pressure employers to make health care less affordable for millions of Americans. The Republicans must end their scorched earth campaign against providing decent healthcare to every American, and put forward workable ideas. Democrats must face up to the fact that legislative change of this magnitude always requires fixes.
The 40% tax on health benefits must go now. It’s already forcing hospitality employers to cut benefits and knock workers out of the middle class. As important, we need sensible rules to allow non-profit health plans to compete on a level playing field with for-profit insurers that are getting approximately $1.7 billion dollars a month in taxpayer money, locking out plans like ours. Without these fixes, tens of thousands of hardworking hotel, food service and gaming workers, many of them immigrants, will have to take the equivalent of a substantial pay cut. That’s unacceptable in an era of growing inequality.
UNITE HERE represents 270,000 women and men across North America who work in the hotel, gaming, food service, manufacturing, textile, distribution, laundry, transportation, and airport industries.
