Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-NJ) Plays Leading Role in Latest Trump-GOP Effort to Destroy Health Care for Millions of Americans
UNITE HERE Launches Radio Spot Highlighting MacArthur’s Pivotal Role in Effort by Trump and GOP
Atlantic City, NJ — UNITE HERE, a union representing more than 275,000 working men and women in the hospitality industry, including 20,000 members in New Jersey, launched a new ad campaign against Rep. Tom MacArthur (R-NJ). MacArthur is singled out for his particularly hypocritical role in pushing to pass the latest Trump-GOP healthcare bill.
The previous Trumpcare plan failed to garner enough support to hold a vote in the House. That bill would have slashed taxes for the rich, while throwing millions off health care and driving up premiums and out-of-pocket costs for millions more. Rep. MacArthur is brokering a new deal to secure passage of an even more disastrous Trump-driven healthcare overhaul that would destroy protections for millions of Americans with pre-existing conditions, such as diabetes and cancer, and do more damage to healthcare access for the hard-pressed middle class.
“Tom MacArthur is the puppet of Donald Trump and extremists in Congress; he is now playing their dangerous game to destroy healthcare for the American middle class,” said Bob McDevitt, President of UNITE HERE Local 54, a local of almost 10,000 members in South Jersey. “Of particular note is MacArthur’s glaring hypocrisy: here is a man who proclaims his concern for opioid addicts, yet this latest bill will gut access to treatment, along with destroying access to lifesaving care for people with diabetes, cancer, and other chronic illnesses. That is why we have singled out MacArthur for particular scorn. We should work to fix—not nix—the ACA. This bill is not the way to do it. We need fewer hypocrites and more patriots in Congress, and MacArthur is not one of them.”
The ad will start running on Friday, April 28 on radio stations throughout New Jersey and are funded by the Working Americans for Affordable Healthcare, a political action committee formed by UNITE HERE to elect candidates who will vote to make our health system more affordable, accessible, and cost-effective, and to help defeat candidates who have or will vote to undermine more affordable health care.
