Hollywood, FL—A strike was narrowly prevented last night when UNITE HERE Local 355 and the Diplomat Beach Resort reached an agreement for a new contract a few minutes before midnight.
After the bargaining agreement between the Diplomat Beach Resort and UNITE HERE Local 355 had expired, workers voted by 99% to authorize a strike—demanding $20 wages and to prevent subcontracting in the hotel—they won both in this new contract.
“This is an incredible victory for workers in South Florida. This was possible because workers decided to fight back, willing to risk it all. Hospitality workers are the backbone of South Florida’s economy and finally the value of their contribution is being recognized with wages they can live on,” said Wendi Walsh, Secretary-Treasurer of UNITE HERE Local 355. “We thank the support of labor unions across the country who helped make this victory possible. Our union will continue to organize to fight for all hospitality workers to have union power.”
UNITE HERE Local 355 is the hospitality workers’ union in South Florida, representing 7,000 workers in hotels, airports, restaurant, stadiums, and casinos and 450 housekeepers, cooks, servers, cashiers, bellmen, and bartenders at the Diplomat. The majority of workers at the Diplomat are women and 84% are immigrants and people of color.
