Locked Out San Francisco Hotel Workers Face Life Threatening Health Problems as Medical Coverage Runs Out
Who: Locked out San Francisco hotel workers and their families
What: Press Conference: to discuss the impact the employer lockout — which includes cutting off health care coverage to Local 2 members and their families — is having on people with serious health problems.
When: Thursday, November 11, 2004 at 1:30pm
Where: UNITE HERE, Local 2 office 209 Golden Gate Avenue (between Hyde and Leavenworth), Action Room San Francisco
Why: For the past six weeks, thousands of San Francisco hotel workers have been locked out of their jobs by the management of 14 Class A hotels. The employers stopped making contributions to the Health and Welfare Trust Fund, which administers health benefits to Local 2 members, and on December 1, more than 4,000 workers and their families will lose their health care coverage. Some of them are undergoing treatment for life threatening diseases such as cancer, kidney failure, AIDS and heart failure. Others are due to deliver babies in the coming months. Local 2 members and their families will be available to the media to discuss this crisis they are now facing.
Workers have been locked out of the following hotels: Argent, Crowne Plaza Union Square, Fairmont San Francisco, Four Seasons San Francisco, Grand Hyatt, Hilton, Holiday Inn Civic Center, Holiday Inn Express, Holiday Inn Fisherman’s Wharf, Hyatt Regency San Francisco, Mark Hopkins, Omni San Francisco Hotel, Sheraton Palace Hotel, and Westin St. Francis.
