Hyatt Workers Will Vote Today, December 21 on Ratifying Tentative Agreement
WHO: Striking Hyatt hotel workers with the UNITE HERE Local 2 union will vote on ratifying a tentative agreement for a new contract. Approx. 650 Hilton workers remain on strike at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square, San Francisco’s biggest hotel.
WHAT: Ratification vote for Hyatt workers. Ninety-day strike will end at Hyatt if contract is approved.
WHERE: Local 2 union office, 209 Golden Gate Ave., San Francisco. Picket lines continue 24/7 at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square (333 O’Farrell St.).
WHEN: Ratification vote 10am-6pm on Saturday, Dec. 21, 2024. Picket lines continue 24/7 at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square (333 O’Farrell St.).
WHY: After nearly three months on strike, hotel workers with the UNITE HERE Local 2 union have reached a tentative agreement for a new contract at Hyatt hotels in San Francisco. The agreement is the same as was ratified by striking Marriott workers on Thursday. Hyatt workers will vote today on ratifying the agreement and ending their strike. Approx. 650 Hilton workers remain on strike at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square, San Francisco’s biggest hotel; today is Day 91 of the strike.
The tentative agreement at Hyatt would cover approx. 600 workers, including 250 workers who have been on strike for nearly three months at the Grand Hyatt San Francisco. It matches the terms of the agreement reached earlier this week for 2,000 Marriott workers, including:
- Preserving workers’ union health insurance plan, which provides quality affordable health care for workers and their families.
- Wage increases throughout the life of the contract.
- New protections against understaffing and workload increases.
- Four-year term, expiring in 2028.
“Winning this contract is the biggest victory of my life,” said Sergio Hernández, a busser at the Grand Hyatt San Francisco for 16 years. “Securing affordable healthcare and having respect on the job were my main goals. Now I won’t have to worry about our healthcare being cut. Everything we won was because of the sacrifice we made to fight for our rights. Now, I’m going to the Hilton to walk with them on the picket line until they win.”
“We’re done with the Marriott. We’re done with the Hyatt. Now it’s time for Hilton to sign the contract before they lose more business. We will fight as long as it takes,” said Jacov Awoke, a doorman at the Hilton San Francisco Union Square for 35 years.
“San Francisco hotel workers have demonstrated extraordinary courage to protect their families and their health care,” said Lizzy Tapia, President of UNITE HERE Local 2. “Hyatt and Marriott did the right thing, and now all eyes are on Hilton.”
Over 10,000 hotel workers have gone on strike in eleven cities across the U.S. since Labor Day. The strike began on Sept. 22 and grew to include 2,500 hotel workers. The tentative agreement with Hyatt was reached late Friday night and includes Hyatt workers at the Grand Hyatt San Francisco, Hotel Kabuki, and Hyatt Regency San Francisco at Embarcadero. If workers ratify their contract at the vote today, the strike will conclude at the Grand Hyatt San Francisco.
