Hotel Strike Wave Continues in Philadelphia as Wyndham Workers Walk Off the Job Following Victory at the Hampton Inn
PHILADELPHIA, PA – Workers at the Wyndham Philadelphia Historic District hotel affiliated with UNITE HERE Local 274 are on strike, demanding family-sustaining wages, humane staffing levels, and improvements to health care and pension ahead of an anticipated tourism boom in 2026.
The strike comes one week after their union siblings at the Hampton Inn Philadelphia Center City unanimously ratified a historic contract with major improvements to wages, healthcare, and working conditions. The Hampton Inn is the first of eight Center City hotels to settle a new contract with UNITE HERE Local 274.
Many Wyndham workers are veterans of a successful strike at the hotel in November 2021, which won significant wage and workload improvements.
“We’re striking for a fair contract, for fair wages. We’re standing up to the bosses to gain our respect and integrity back,” said Monica Burks, Wyndham restaurant server.
The Wyndham Historic District is owned by RLJ Lodging Trust, a real estate investment trust founded by billionaire Robert L. Johnson. The hotel is operated by Aimbridge Hospitality, which also operates the Sheraton Philadelphia Downtown, where workers walked the picket line for four days in October. Negotiations at the Sheraton are ongoing.
Wyndham employees are striking alongside their union colleagues on the other side of the country: workers affiliated with UNITE HERE Local 11 have also begun a strike at the Hilton Garden Inn Hollywood, which is also owned by RLJ Lodging Trust and operated by Aimbridge. The Hilton Garden Inn Hollywood is currently in contract negotiations with UNITE HERE Local 11.
