WHY: Since 1950, the Sidney Hillman Foundation has recognized journalists, writers, and public figures whose work contributes to social and economic justice. Annual awards are given in the following categories: Books (non-fiction), Newspaper Reporting, Magazine Reporting, Broadcast Journalism (including television and radio), Photojournalism, and Blogs.
A UNITE HERE Officer’s Award will also be presented this year to artist and activist Harry Belafonte, in recognition of his life long commitment to social justice and civil rights. Actor and activist Danny Glover will present the award to Mr. Belafonte.
The Foundation’s judges this year are Hendrik Hertzberg, Senior Editor, The New Yorker; Susan Meiselas, independent photojournalist; Harold Meyerson, Executive Editor, The American Prospect; and Rose Arce, Senior Producer, CNN. Bruce Raynor, president of UNITE HERE, serves as president of the Foundation.
