Candlelight Vigil, March and Rally for Philadelphia Hotel Workers
Community will show support for hotel workers in their 4th month of a contract struggle
When: Tuesday, November 23rd at 4:30 p.m.
Where: March will begin simultaneously at Radisson Plaza Warwick Hotel (17th and Locust) and the Wyndham Philadelphia at Franklin Plaza Hotel (17th and Race) and culminate with a rally at Love Park (15th and JFK).
Who: Hundreds of local hotel workers and their supporters. Local union members and labor leaders.
Why: Hotel workers in Philadelphia are entering the 7th week of contract extensions with no near term end in sight. At the heart of this dispute, are the lives of approximately 1000 Local 274 members, who work in 12 center city area hotels, and their families.
Hotel workers in Philadelphia have been engaged in this contract fight for four months. After numerous bargaining sessions, with very little progress being made in key areas like comprehensive health care for hotel workers and their families, secure pensions, and fair wage increases, UNITE HERE members are ready to show the community that we mean business and that we are serious about our proposals at the bargaining table.
Casino workers from UNITE HERE Local 54 in Atlantic City recently won a strong contract after their strike. Through rallies and other actions, the community showed their strong support for the striking workers and this played a large part in their success. In order to show that the hotel workers here in Philadelphia have the same kind of support, UNITE HERE is taking their struggle to the streets of Philadelphia.
