AFL-CIO and Affiliates Discuss Economic Recovery, Bailouts, and the Impact on the American Heartland
As the November 2010 elections approach, working men and women across the country are calling on their elected representatives to make Wall Street and corporate America pay for their role in destroying millions of American jobs. On May 13, the AFL-CIO, the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers and UNITE HERE, joined by experts and Congressional leaders, will hold a panel discussion looking at how solutions for real economic recovery must address the creation of good jobs and the role that corporate subsidies have played in our current economic climate.
The panel discussion will be followed by the premier screening of the short film Show Us the Tax Breaks, which tells the story of how the Union Tank Car company abused economic development incentives to enrich its owners while destroying good middle-class American jobs and without creating any tangible benefit to the national economy. This provocative film argues that pitting states against one another as Union Tank Car did violates the spirit of public development subsidies and undermines working families.
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka currently sits on the President’s Economic Recovery Advisory Board (PERAB) representing the union movement’s interests in creating solutions that both improve the company and produce good, middle-class jobs.
