Labor Unites to Save TPS
For decades, people who came to the United States after fleeing natural disaster, political unrest, or violence in their home countries have found refuge in Temporary Protected Status (TPS). Under TPS, hundreds of thousands of survivors have been able to build lives in and contribute to our country and their communities. TPS holders pay taxes, own homes, join unions, and raise their children in safety they could not imagine before they arrived in the U.S.
Since its inception, Republican and Democratic administrations have extended the program to allow refugees a chance at the American Dream. But TPS is under attack. The current administration’s volatile and racist policies have transformed TPS holders into deportation targets overnight.
Deporting hundreds of thousands of TPS holders would tear families apart and devastate the U.S. economy, especially the hospitality sector. It would also further cripple the economies of the affected countries, fueling the humanitarian crises already in place. Our neighbors, coworkers, and friends who’ve built a life in this country deserve better than the uncertainty and fear the current administration’s volatile and racist policies create. Their children, many of whom are U.S. citizens, face having their parents ripped away from them.
We’ve rallied, marched, and lobbied our members of Congress. Our fight isn’t over until all TPS holders have a permanent pathway to citizenship in the U.S. We’re fighting for legislation that allows all TPS holders a permanent, safe place in this country, while also protecting the DREAMers who came to the U.S. as children.
Call on Congress to support bipartisan legislation to create a permanent pathway for TPS and DACA residents.
