We commend congressional leaders in both the House and Senate for agreeing to include full repeal of the 40% Health Benefits Tax (“Cadillac Tax”) in the end-of-year continuing resolution. This historic agreement, won after years of campaigning and lobbying against this tax, will prevent lawmakers from leveraging more taxes from 178 million working Americans who get their health coverage from their employers.
The 300,0000 working women and men represented by UNITE HERE have faced harder fights at the bargaining table, higher costs and shrinking coverage from this looming tax and this package. On behalf of the housekeepers, cooks, dishwashers and others we represent, we commend the bi-partisan leadership in both the House and Senate, in particular Congressman Joe Courtney (D-CT) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who championed legislation to fully repeal this tax.
We look forward to House and Senate passage of this year-end package and seeing the president sign into law full repeal of the 40% Health Benefits Tax once and for all. Working families have waited far too long to see this tax repealed and share in a momentous victory.
