UNITE HERE is an organization of working people who believe that one job should be enough to provide for our families. We represent over 300,000 people across the United States and Canada working in the hospitality industry and beyond, and have been the fastest growing private-sector union in the United States. With UNITE HERE, housekeepers and cooks have achieved middle-class wages and top-notch health insurance in industries often defined by poverty wages and negligible benefits..
UNITE HERE has a widely recognized, decades-long track record organizing the people progressives need to vote. And while COVID-19 has had a devastating impact on our members—with 98% laid off during the Spring 2020 peak of the pandemic and a slow recovery anticipated for the hospitality industry—we were determined to do whatever it takes to Take Back our country in 2020.
It’s taken decades of organizing, marching, and striking to win the good pay, benefits, and dignity on the job we’ve earned for ourselves and our families. We’re ready to take back what’s ours.
Prior to the pandemic, we made a commitment to build on proven GOTV successes in regions across North America because Donald Trump had failed us. As the pandemic spread, instead of supporting working people in the form of expanded unemployment benefits, protection of health insurance, and swift response to control spread of the virus, Trump and his cronies bailed out corporations.
We needed a President and Vice President who are committed to working with us to make our workplaces better, protect our union health insurance, implement immigration reform, stand up to sexual harassment, and take meaningful, transformative steps to dismantle the scourge of systemic racism in our country.
As part of our Take Back 2020 campaign, 1,700 canvassers knocked on the doors of three million Americans in Nevada, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Florida. These efforts helped drive the unprecedented turnout of the 2020 presidential election and made the critical difference that won the election for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris.
By the Numbers
- 3 million doors were knocked by UNITE HERE canvassers in Nevada, Arizona, Pennsylvania, and Florida
- 462,135 infrequent voters pledged to vote for Biden/Harris via a conversation with a UNITE HERE canvasser
- Over two-thirds of our conversations were with voters of color
- 10 million phone numbers were dialed by UNITE HERE phone bankers
Now, UNITE HERE is working in partnership with key allies to deliver the vote for Raphael Warnock and Jon Ossoff, because hospitality workers urgently need a Senate that will pass meaningful relief for their families, including extended enhanced unemployment benefits and health care.
