On Wednesday, August 3rd, more than 100 workers and students rallied at Pomona College to protest the treatment of a fired dining hall worker at the school. On the picket line outside of the college’s administrative offices, Pomona workers, students, and alumni were joined by UNITE HERE members, including workers and students from Loyola Marymount University, where workers organized to join UNITE HERE Local 11 in April 2011.
With shouts of “What do we want? Francisco back!,” the rally protested the recent termination of Francisco Garcia, a cook at Pomona for 16 years. Garcia is both a leader in the dining hall workers’ unionization drive and an injured worker. Protestors also presented Unfair Labor Practice charges to the general manager of Pomona’s campus dining program, the assistant director of campus facilities, and the college Vice President. The school will face an investigation into Garcia’s termination by the National Labor Relations Board’s Regional Office.
