The union contract between employees and Guest Services, Inc. (GSI) at federal government cafeterias, restaurants and private entities throughout the D.C. area is expiring and the workers and GSI have not agreed to a new contract. Beginning September 12, 2016, there is a risk of labor disruption including strikes, pickets and boycotts of the GSI cafeterias at the following locations:
- George Bush Center for Intelligence
- Walter Reed Bethesda
- Office of Naval Intelligence
- Navy Yard
- National Shrine
- Holocaust Museum
- United Association
- Indigo Landing
GSI workers are demanding a fair contract that allows them to support themselves and their families. Many GSI workers tell stories of having to choose between going to the doctor, paying rent, and buying food. In the past six months, UNITE HERE Local 23 has settled 39 contracts with 5 companies in the D.C. area.
Guest Services, Inc. is one of the main providers of food for federal employees in the D.C. region. Serving food in federal government cafeterias and tourist sights, GSI serves tens of thousands of government workers and tourists every day. The labor dispute between UNITE HERE Local 23 and GSI is ongoing and could result in disruption to cafeteria services at the involved locations.
UNITE HERE Local 23, the union of cafeteria workers in the Washington, D.C. region, represents 1,200 government cafeteria workers at 37 government buildings.
