Local 35 Secretary-Treasurer
New Haven, Connecticut
Earlier this month, Local 35 Secretary-Treasurer Tyisha Walker assumed the second most powerful elected office in the City of New Haven. Tyisha became the new President of the city’s Board of Alders and the first woman to lead the body. This is the latest in a long list of accomplishments for Tyisha, who got her start working in the Yale dining halls in 1998. By 2012 Tyisha had become a stalwart member of Local 35 and one of its most fierce contract negotiators.
Tyisha says, hard work and a commitment by UNITE HERE to cultivate emerging leadership has allowed her to make a lasting impact on her community. According to Tyisha: “It’s been part of Local 35 history and culture to find leaders from our rank-and-file. That’s what brought me into leadership, and I have taken on the responsibility to reach out to other Local 35 workers to do the same.”
Tyisha has two daughters –Tenaiya Baker and Tiasia Jones — who are exceedingly proud of their mother. We wish Tyisha the best of luck in her new position, we’re inspired by her exceptional leadership and we have full confidence that she will continue to fight hard for her constituents and workers in New Haven and across the state of Connecticut.
